CAMPUS
A springboard for talent and for projects
The University is organised in such a way that individuals can follow structured courses as well as courses of their own choice, building up their own project and making use of the structures and the resources available.
Computer rooms, Wifi areas, internet access, resource centres, language laboratories and media libraries all offer different ways to access information and knowledge. The network of libraries hold precious documentary resources, the heritage of years of distinguished scholarship, and some of these are now available on line.
All these resources underpin the University's teaching and are available to help the student build up his or her courses of study and improve his or her personal work.
The University has undertaken several programmes in order to develop a digital work environment for the benefit of everybody in the University.
The new technologies reinforce the precious know-how that has been built up over 40 years in the field of distance learning. By these means the isolated student can remain efficiently in touch with the courses available in several disciplines.
The University also includes teams of men and women whose mission is to welcome and inform the student, and provide careers advice and orientation. An ongoing effort is made to improve teaching conditions and educational tools. Every year the University holds an induction day when it welcomes foreign students on mobility programmes and new members of staff.
A disability office specialises in the welcome and the accompaniment of handicapped students throughout their studies.
There are numerous associations, a cultural service, a service for student life and an inter-university radio which are all means for everyone, freely and in a responsible manner, to become full members of a university that is open to the outside world.
A Students' Centre was opened in April 2006 to bring various student services together under one roof. Students' projects can be developed here and there is support for student activities on the campus.
The University is set on one of the largest campuses in Europe. Half of the 235 hectare site is given over to natural, open spaces. Now that the tramway serves the campus, the University and Bordeaux city centre have been brought closer together. A 10 year development plan will take into account all the wishes of campus users : buildings for teaching and research, student accommodation, natural, open spaces, facilities for cultural and sporting activities, local shops, business start-ups …
